Retail Sales Test a Record High as Applied Materials Slips

Wall Street enters Friday with a record high behind it and a consumer test directly ahead. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% on Thursday to 7,798.99 after July producer prices were unchanged for the month, softer than expected and down from June's revised 0.1% decline. Nasdaq futures are modestly positive before the bell, S&P 500 futures are nearly flat, and Dow futures are slightly lower as investors wait for July retail sales at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

The setup is constructive but demanding. Softer wholesale inflation lowered the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.65% at Thursday's close and cut the market-implied probability of a September Federal Reserve rate increase to about 35%. Yet the S&P 500 is already pricing in a favorable mix of cooling inflation and resilient growth. Retail sales must now show that households can keep spending without reviving the rates trade that has challenged equity valuations all summer.

Corporate reactions add a sharper edge. Applied Materials is down about 5% before the bell after its fiscal third-quarter report, another case of strong AI-linked expectations limiting the reward for a solid print. Reddit is up more than 12% after being selected for the S&P 500, while Nu Holdings is up more than 8% after earnings. Oil is also rebounding as Middle East supply worries return, preventing the market from treating this week's friendlier inflation data as a permanent solution.

Overnight Developments

Softer PPI sends the S&P 500 to a record

Thursday's producer-price report reinforced the week's disinflation message. The Producer Price Index for final demand was unchanged in July, while the annual rate eased to 4.7% from 5.5% in June. Final-demand goods prices fell 0.7%, led by a 3.1% decline in energy and a 5.7% drop in gasoline. Services prices rose 0.2%, and the measure excluding food, energy, and trade services increased 0.4%, so the details were cooler at the headline level without eliminating underlying pressure.

Stocks responded to the favorable balance. The S&P 500 gained 50.49 points to 7,798.99, the Nasdaq Composite added 214.54 points to 26,803.03, and the Dow rose 69.72 points to 53,839.99. The Russell 2000 advanced 7.36 points to 3,052.85. The record close matters because the market absorbed Cisco's 8.4% decline and still advanced, showing that participation was broader than a single AI or mega-cap trade.

Applied Materials becomes the latest expectations test

Applied Materials shares are near $507.69 before Friday's open, down 5.02% after fiscal third-quarter results. The reaction follows the same pattern Cisco displayed a day earlier: investors are distinguishing between healthy operating results and results strong enough to justify an exceptional prior rally. For the wider semiconductor group, the key signal is whether the selling stays concentrated in Applied Materials or spreads to equipment, memory, and foundry-exposed peers.

The stock's decline does not by itself reverse the AI capital-spending thesis. It does show that the market is raising the standard for guidance, order visibility, and margins. With Nvidia due to report later in August, investors are likely to treat Applied Materials as a positioning check. A contained decline alongside firm Nasdaq futures would suggest rotation within AI rather than a wholesale retreat from the theme.

Reddit joins the S&P 500 as Nu rallies

Reddit is trading near $177.97, up 12.59%, after S&P Dow Jones Indices selected the company to enter the S&P 500 before trading begins on Tuesday, August 18. Reddit will replace AvalonBay Communities, which is being acquired by Equity Residential. Index-tracking funds will need to adjust their holdings, creating a mechanical source of demand even as active investors debate valuation after the initial jump.

Nu Holdings is up 8.53% near $15.09 following its quarterly report. The paired moves make communication services and financial technology the most visible pockets of premarket strength. They also provide useful breadth against Applied Materials' weakness: Friday is not a simple risk-off session, but a selective tape rewarding discrete catalysts while the broader market waits for macro confirmation.

Global Markets

Asia finished mixed, with AI-heavy markets again outperforming. Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.6% to 68,713.80 and South Korea's Kospi rose 2.4% to 6,977.94. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.1% to 25,116.85, while the Shanghai Composite was nearly unchanged at 3,927.18. Australia's ASX 200 fell 0.8% to 9,115.20. The divergence shows that semiconductor momentum remains powerful, but it is not translating into a uniform regional bid.

Europe is mixed in morning trade. Germany's DAX is up 0.7% near 26,489.50, France's CAC 40 is up 0.1% near 8,659.96, and Britain's FTSE 100 is slightly lower near 10,766.66. European markets are balancing softer U.S. inflation against a renewed oil rise and country-specific political risk. The stronger DAX fits the week's cyclical and industrial preference, while the flatter FTSE reflects a less decisive resource and financial mix.

Macro and Rates

The 10-year Treasury yield is at 4.657%, up about one basis point from Thursday's 4.647% close but below the 4.68% level seen before the PPI release. That small rebound is consistent with caution rather than a renewed bond selloff. A soft retail-sales report could pull the yield back toward 4.60%, while a strong control-group reading would test 4.70% by reminding investors that the Fed still faces demand as well as inflation risk.

WTI crude is up 0.64% near $81.77, and Brent is near $87.27 after both benchmarks fell Thursday. The rebound reflects persistent concern over tanker flows and the Strait of Hormuz. Gold is down 0.17% near $4,413 after Thursday's profit-taking, while EUR/USD is up 0.21% at 1.1553. Bitcoin is the weaker risk signal, falling 1.01% to $62,699 and remaining disconnected from the calm implied by a VIX near 14.57.

Retail sales will define the growth side of the soft-landing trade Consensus calls for headline July retail sales to rise 0.1% after a 0.2% June increase. Sales excluding autos are expected to rise 0.2%, while the control group is expected to gain 0.3%. A clean, moderate report would support earnings without forcing yields higher. A large upside surprise could be good for revenue expectations but difficult for rate-sensitive valuations.

Corporate News

Applied Materials is the most important earnings reaction because it sits at the intersection of foundry investment, memory expansion, advanced packaging, and AI infrastructure. The 5% premarket decline indicates that execution is being judged against an unusually high bar. Watch whether the stock can reclaim $520 after the open; failure to stabilize could pressure peers even if the Nasdaq remains positive.

Reddit will join the S&P 500 on August 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities. The immediate rally reflects anticipated index-fund buying, but the move also creates a potential sell-the-news setup once the rebalance is complete. Nu Holdings is the other major winner, rising after earnings as investors reward its growth and operating momentum. Tesla is modestly higher after Thursday's 3.8% advance, while most other mega-cap technology names are close to flat.

Friday's scheduled earnings slate is lighter than Thursday's. MS&AD Insurance Group, Cosan, RLX Technology, Americas Gold and Silver, and Sigma Lithium are among the names due. Their individual market impact should remain secondary to retail sales, Michigan sentiment, and the post-earnings action in Applied Materials.

The 8:30 a.m. release should drive the opening move because the control group feeds directly into estimates for consumer spending in gross domestic product. At 10:00 a.m., the preliminary University of Michigan survey will add a read on confidence and inflation expectations. A moderate sales report paired with stable inflation expectations is the cleanest outcome for stocks. Strong sales plus rising expectations would complicate the relief created by CPI and PPI.

The market has broadened, but valuation discipline is back Thursday's record came despite Cisco's sharp decline, and Friday's futures are holding despite Applied Materials' drop. That resilience is positive. The lesson from both earnings reactions, however, is that a good quarter can still disappoint when the starting valuation assumes exceptional results. Breadth is improving at the same time the market is becoming more selective.
Oil remains the unresolved inflation variable July PPI benefited from lower energy and gasoline prices, but WTI is rising again Friday and supply risks around the Strait of Hormuz remain active. A renewed crude advance toward $85 would challenge the week's disinflation narrative, especially if retail sales show households are still willing to absorb higher prices.

The AlphaEdge Prediction

Friday's session should move through two macro checkpoints: retail sales before the open and Michigan sentiment after the first half hour of cash trading. Thursday's record close at 7,798.99 gives the S&P 500 positive momentum, while a VIX below 15 shows limited demand for protection. The risk is that calm positioning leaves the market vulnerable to a rates-driven reversal if consumption is much stronger than expected.

Base case: Headline retail sales near 0.1%, ex-auto sales near 0.2%, and a 0.3% control-group gain preserve the soft-landing narrative. The S&P 500 trades between 7,775 and 7,835, with Reddit and Nu leading company-specific strength while Applied Materials limits semiconductor upside. A close above 7,800 would confirm Thursday's breakout without requiring another large index gain.

Bull case: A modest retail-sales miss is paired with stable Michigan inflation expectations, pulling the 10-year yield toward 4.60%. The S&P 500 clears 7,835 and reaches toward 7,865 as real estate, small caps, and rate-sensitive growth shares join the advance. Applied Materials stabilizing above $510 would strengthen this outcome by containing the earnings damage.

Bear case: The control group rises 0.5% or more and Michigan inflation expectations increase, pushing the 10-year yield toward 4.70%. The S&P 500 loses 7,775 and tests 7,735, while Applied Materials pulls other chip-equipment shares lower and Bitcoin's weakness spreads into speculative growth. A renewed WTI move above $83 would add a second source of rate pressure.

The dominant narrative is a handoff from inflation relief to demand confirmation: softer CPI and PPI have carried the S&P 500 to a record, but Friday's retail-sales report must show enough spending to support profits without forcing the Federal Reserve back toward a hike. Respect the breakout above 7,775, but avoid chasing the first move until Treasury yields confirm it.
